Turbo vs Deep Stack: Which One Should You Run?
Turbo and deep stack sit at opposite ends of the same dial. Both are legitimate; they optimise for different things, and choosing between them is really a question about what you want the evening to be.
Turbo if the constraint is time: 10–12 minute levels, 50–100 big blinds, finishes in about half the usual. Deep stack if the constraint is satisfaction: 150–300 big blinds, 25–30 minute levels, and considerably more poker. Most home games want something in between.

Choose turbo when
There is a hard stop and the group would rather play fast than play a shorter tournament.
It is a second event running alongside or after the main tournament for players who busted.
The field is large relative to the time available: a turbo resolves twenty-plus players in an evening.
Choose deep stack when
The group keeps saying the tournament ended too fast or felt like a coin flip.
It is a marquee event: a quarterly special or a league championship, where five hours is the point.
You have the chips. A 20,000 stack is around 39 chips per player, so twelve players is nearly 470 distributed.
Running a turbo because the evening is short. If you only need to fit three hours into two, run a normal structure sized for two hours: 15-minute levels, 100 big blinds. That is still poker. A turbo is a deliberate choice for a faster, more volatile game: not a way to save time. See the two-hour structure.
The middle ground most groups actually want
Around 150 big blinds with 20-minute levels for the first half, dropping to 15 minutes for the second. It gives a playable first hour, a defined finish around three hours, and a final table that arrives because the chips consolidated rather than because the blinds ate everybody. The three-hour structure is exactly this.
Ask the group, but ask precisely
“Do you want a faster game?” gets an unhelpful answer, because everyone wants a faster game in the abstract. Two better questions:
“What time do you need to leave?” That gives you the structure length directly, and it is the constraint that actually matters.
“Did last month feel like poker or like a coin flip?” If the answer is coin flip, the group wants more depth, not more speed: whatever they say about time.

Neither: they optimise for different things. Turbo prioritises speed and accepts higher variance; deep stack prioritises the quality of the poker and costs several extra hours.
How much longer is a deep stack tournament?
Roughly 50–100% longer than a standard structure with the same field, commonly five to six hours for ten to twenty players.
Does a deep stack tournament reduce luck?
It reduces it relatively. More chips relative to the blinds means more hands played to later streets and fewer all-in confrontations, so skill has more opportunity to show. It does not remove variance.
