Poker Blind Structure for a 3-Hour Tournament

Three hours is the length most home games actually want: long enough for real poker, short enough that everyone is home at a sensible hour. Here is a structure that lands there reliably for six to twelve players, with the level table first and the reasoning underneath.

The structure

A 10,000 starting stack, blinds from 25/50, 20-minute levels, and one 10-minute break after level 4. Ten levels of scheduled play is 3 hours 20 minutes; most fields of eight to twelve finish in level 8 or 9.

Antes are big blind antes, posted by the big blind only. Level 11 is insurance for a slow final three; most tournaments do not reach it.

Ten players uses 280 chips, so a 500-chip set covers the field with a bank left for rebuys and the colour-up.

Why it lands at three hours

Ten players at 10,000 chips each puts 100,000 chips in play. With three players left the average stack is about 33,000, and tournaments resolve quickly once the big blind reaches roughly a tenth of the average: here, around 3,000. The structure reaches 2,000 at level 10 and 3,000 at level 11, which is three hours and twenty minutes of scheduled play.

In practice most fields finish earlier, because the blind climb accelerates and the shorter 15-minute levels from level 7 onwards compress the endgame. Budget three hours and be pleasantly surprised.

Adjusting it

  • Six players? Cut levels 5 onwards to 15 minutes. A short-handed table burns through levels faster.

  • Sixteen players over two tables? Keep the structure but expect three and a half to four hours: table breaks cost time.

  • Running long? Shorten levels rather than skipping them. Skipping from 400 to 1,000 removes the tournament rather than shortening it.

  • Want a longer game? The four-hour structure is the next size up.

Plan the colour-up

The 25 chips stop being useful once the small blind passes 150. Race them off at the break rather than at level 7, when doing it costs you ten minutes of play you did not budget for.

Payouts for a three-hour game

Eight to twelve players usually means three paid places at 50% / 30% / 20%. Twelve or more, consider a fourth at 40/28/20/12. Full ladders in payout structures, and the payout calculator handles the cash amounts and rounding.

Running it with rebuys

Adding rebuys to this structure puts more chips in play, so it needs one or two extra levels at the end rather than the same ladder.

Freezeout + add-on220,00010–11~3h 40m
Rebuys + add-on340,00011–12~4 hrs
Add-ons at 15,000. If you want rebuys and a three-hour finish, shorten levels 7 onwards to 12 minutes rather than adding levels.

The two levels most worth protecting

Levels 1 and 2. They are the deepest, the most sociable, and the part of the evening that makes a home game worth attending. If the night is running late, take the time from levels 7 onwards: those are already short-stacked and resolve quickly regardless. See speeding up a tournament.

Frequently asked questions

How long should blind levels be for a 3-hour tournament?

Twenty minutes for the first six levels, dropping to fifteen after that. Twenty-minute levels give roughly eight to ten hands at each blind size, which is enough for the level to mean something.

What starting stack works for a 3-hour poker tournament?

10,000 chips with blinds opening at 25/50, which is 200 big blinds. That is deliberately deeper than a casino structure, because a home game wants the first hour to be playable rather than decisive.

Can 20 players finish in three hours?

Not reliably with this structure. Two tables add table-break and balancing time, and twenty players means twice the chips to consolidate. Either accept four hours or cut the levels to fifteen minutes throughout.

Your next step

Check the structure against your chip set using chip distribution, and if the timing needs tuning, how long blind levels should be covers the trade-offs. The free blind structure calculator will generate a variant for any other duration.
