The Best Poker Chip Distribution for a Home Tournament
A good chip distribution gives every player enough small chips to post blinds for the first hour without making change, enough large chips that the stack stays manageable, and a total that reconciles exactly to the intended starting stack. Here are distributions for the three common stack sizes, each of which adds up precisely.
Give each player roughly 20–30 physical chips across three or four denominations. The smallest chip must equal the small blind at level one; the largest should be no more than about 10% of the stack. Check that the values total the stack exactly before the night.
5,000 starting stack
| Denomination | Chips | Value |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | 8 | 200 |
| 100 | 8 | 800 |
| 500 | 4 | 2,000 |
| 1,000 | 2 | 2,000 |
| Total | 22 | 5,000 |
10,000 starting stack
| Denomination | Chips | Value |

| 25 | 8 | 200 |
| 100 | 8 | 800 |
| 500 | 6 | 3,000 |
| 1,000 | 6 | 6,000 |
| Total | 28 | 10,000 |
20,000 starting stack
| Denomination | Chips | Value |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | 8 | 200 |
| 100 | 8 | 800 |
| 500 | 8 | 4,000 |
| 1,000 | 10 | 10,000 |
| 5,000 | 1 | 5,000 |

The two rules that make a distribution work
The smallest chip equals the level-one small blind. If blinds start at 25/50, the smallest chip is 25. A 5 chip in that structure is dead weight from the first hand.
The largest chip is no more than 10% of the stack. Bigger than that and players cannot make a proportionate bet without breaking a chip every time.
Planning the colour-up
The smallest denomination stops being useful once the small blind passes about six times its value. Write the colour-up into the structure in advance:
| Colour-up | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Remove 25s | First break (blinds 100/200) | No blind or ante uses 25 any more |
| Remove 100s | Second break (blinds 500/1,000) | Smallest useful unit is now 500 |
Bag or rack every starting stack in advance. It turns registration from ten minutes of counting into thirty seconds of handing out bags, and it guarantees every player gets exactly the same stack, which counting on the night does not.
Rebuys and the bank
Every rebuy is another full stack. Keep a separate bank of pre-counted rebuy stacks, and count how many you can actually build before you announce unlimited rebuys. How many chips you need covers the totals.
Building the stacks efficiently
Counting 28 chips into ten bags one at a time is twenty minutes of work. Two techniques make it five.
Count one stack precisely, then match it. Build the first stack by counting, then build the rest by lining chips up against it. Errors become visible rather than arithmetic.
Use stacks of five. Poker chips are counted in fives everywhere else; building in fives makes miscounts obvious at a glance.
Bag or rack each one. Sandwich bags work. Handing out sealed stacks removes registration counting entirely.
Distributions that do not work
| Distribution | Total | Problem |
|---|---|---|
| 20 × 25, 8 × 100, 2 × 1,000 | 3,300 | Too many small chips; the stack is unwieldy |
| 2 × 25, 3 × 100, 9 × 1,000 | 9,350 | Cannot post two rounds of blinds without change |
| 4 × 25, 4 × 100, 4 × 5,000 | 20,500 | The big chip is 25% of the stack, unbettable |
Frequently asked questions
How do you distribute poker chips for a tournament?
Give each player 20–30 chips across three or four denominations, weighted towards the smaller values for the first hour of blinds. Confirm the values total the intended starting stack exactly before you build the stacks.
How many small chips should each player start with?
Enough to post the small and big blind for at least a full round or two without breaking a larger chip, typically eight of the smallest denomination and eight of the next one up.
What is a colour-up in poker?
Exchanging small-denomination chips for larger ones once the small chips are no longer needed for any blind or ante. Odd chips left over are usually resolved by dealing one card per chip and awarding to the highest cards.
Your next step
Check the distribution against your blind structure: the level-one small blind must match your smallest chip. Blind structures explained covers that side, chip values covers denominations, and ten chip setup mistakes covers what goes wrong.
