How Long Should Poker Blind Levels Be?

Level length is the simplest lever in a blind structure and the one most often set by accident. It decides how many hands are dealt at each blind size, which in turn decides whether the tournament is a game of poker or a sequence of all-ins.

Short answer

15 to 20 minutes for a home game. Use 20 for a three-hour or longer event, 15 for a two-hour one, 10–12 for a turbo, and 30–40 for a deep stack. Anything under 10 minutes and players barely see the button before the blinds change.

Level lengths and what they produce

Level lengthHands per levelFormatFeels like

10–12 min5–6TurboFast, aggressive, high variance

20 min9–10Home-game standardComfortable; the default
30–40 min14–20Deep stackPatient, skill-heavy, long
Hand counts assume a nine-handed home table dealing roughly 25–30 hands an hour. Short-handed tables deal considerably faster.

Why 20 minutes is the default

A 20-minute level at a full home table is about nine or ten hands. That is enough for the blind level to be a period of play rather than a moment: long enough to be dealt a hand from most positions, to see how the table is reacting to the new blinds, and to plan around the next increase.

Below about seven hands per level, the structure starts making decisions for players. They have not had time to accumulate chips through play, so the only way to change their stack is to gamble.

Level length is only half of it

The other half is how fast the blinds climb. A structure with 20-minute levels that doubles the blinds each time finishes faster than one with 12-minute levels that climbs by 1.3×. Both numbers set the pace together. See blind structures explained for how they interact.

Shorten the late levels, not the early ones

If you need to save time, cut levels 7 onwards to 15 minutes and leave the first four at 20. The early levels are where the poker is; the late ones are already short-stacked and resolve quickly regardless.

Adjusting for the field

  • Six or fewer players: shorten by about 25%. A short-handed table plays through hands far faster.

  • Two or more tables: keep the levels the same but expect the tournament to run longer. Table breaks cost time that the structure does not know about.

  • Inexperienced players: longer levels, not shorter. Slower play means fewer hands per level, so a 20-minute level may only be six hands.

Level length and the finish time

Level length is a multiplier on the number of levels your structure needs, so its effect on the finish is easy to calculate exactly.

Level length10 levels12 levelsPlus one break
10 min1h 40m2h 00m+10 min
15 min2h 30m3h 00m+10 min
20 min3h 20m4h 00m+10 min
30 min5h 00m6h 00m+10 min
Most home tournaments finish before the last scheduled level, so these are upper bounds rather than expected times.

Varying the length within a structure

There is no requirement for every level to be the same length, and most well-designed structures are not. The usual pattern is long early levels and shorter late ones: 20 minutes through level 6, then 15 from level 7. That keeps the deep, interesting part of the tournament generous while accelerating the stage that is already resolving itself.

The reverse, short early levels and long late ones, produces the worst of both: no time to play while deep, and a drawn-out endgame.

Frequently asked questions

How long should poker blind levels be?

Fifteen to twenty minutes for most home games. Twenty is the standard for a three-hour tournament; fifteen suits a two-hour window; ten to twelve makes it a turbo.

Are 15-minute blind levels too fast?

No: fifteen minutes is around seven or eight hands at a full table, which is enough for the level to play properly. It becomes too fast below about ten minutes, or if the blinds are also climbing steeply.

How many hands are played in a 20-minute blind level?

Roughly nine or ten at a nine-handed home table. Short-handed tables see considerably more; tables with inexperienced players see fewer.

Should blind levels get shorter later in a tournament?

Many structures do this to bring the finish forward, and it works because the late levels are already short-stacked. Reducing the early levels has a much bigger effect on the quality of the game.
